Do you have a toothache? Maybe you need a Root Canal!

Tooth pain can be attributed to many things, but most often it is a result of infection deep in your tooth. If you have an infected tooth, a root canal might be necessary to remove any infection. At Carolina Smiles, our dentists will see you for a problem-focused exam to determine the cause of your pain and if a root canal is the right treatment for you!

What is a root canal?

A root canal (endodontic therapy) is a dental procedure which repairs infected or badly damaged teeth. If you have a deep cavity that needs treatment or a cracked tooth, infection can enter into the tooth pulp. The tooth pulp is the innermost layer of your tooth made up of various nerves and blood vessels, so infection can be very painful. We call this treatment a "root canal" because during the procedure, Dr. Sakellis will use special dental instruments to remove the infected tooth pulp and disinfect the canals within your tooth's roots. Once she has removed the infected tooth pulp, she will fill the canal with a flexible material called gutta-percha and restore your tooth with a crown for protection.

How will I know if I need a root canal?

Root Canals are needed due to infection, which can be caused by a deep, untreated cavity or a broken tooth. Some patients have no symptoms, but most patients experience some of the following symptoms when they need a root canal.
